Tumblr professors/grad students/teachers, I need your help.
I’ve been asked to devise a way to teach/grade my students on how to take notes in class, because apparently this is not something many upper-level undergraduates know how to do anymore. I have no idea how to teach or do this - I just have always taken notes in a way that makes sense to me but not necessarily to anyone else.
Does anyone have ideas?
Any ideas, anyone? I’m baffled.
Try Cornell Notes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornell_Notes
What about modeling a few different ways to take notes, lecture/teach a class, and then have an open note quiz/test on them? That way students must take notes, but they have a choice as to how works best for each.
I’m a college freshman (Spanish Ed. major), but my sophomore year of high school, my Honors Chemistry teacher actually gave us a lesson (more like advice) on taking notes. She actually encouraged us to devise our own shorthand system using abbreviations that perhaps don’t make much sense to other people but work for you (e.g. I use “fxns” for “functions” in math and I often write the first few letters of words followed by a period, like “lin. prog.” for “linear programming”) and to not worry about copying every single word down verbatim.
I like what lhuddles said, though—maybe show them a few common note-taking methods so they can choose which would work best for them, or so they can mix and match styles on their own.
